The Big Sandy RECC is asking for a rate increase which will raise electricity rates for over 12,000 customers.
The proposed rate increase is more than 13 percent, and a filing with the Public Service Commission would mean $3.4 million.
Big Sandy RECC serves customers in Breathitt, Floyd, Johnson, Knott, Lawrence, Magoffin, and Martin counties.
The company said an increase is necessary now because its finances are being pinched by rising costs, a declining population, and the collapse of the coal industry.
Big Sandy’s last rate increase was in 2018.
