The Department of Environmental Protections said that the state of Kentucky has 71 dams in the state that are high hazard dams and need repair.
In the Lexington Times, Letcher County’s Elkhorn Lake is on top of the list for needing repair to help prevent a possible dam collapse.
The article said that the 112-year-old dam’s concrete slope is rocky and worn down, exposing rusty steel rebar in some places.
The state is looking into ways to pay for repairs noting that $25 million in state funds were recently used to repair dams in Boone and Henderson counties.
