The winningest coach in Kentucky basketball has died. According to WYMT reports, the Scott County Coroner’s Office said an ambulance was called to Billy Hicks’ home after 11 PM Sunday. He was taken to a Georgetown hospital, where he later died. The Coroner says the cause of death appears to be natural causes. Hicks was born in Harlan Co. He spent 38 years coaching high school boys basketball in the state. 25 of those years were spent at Scott County High School. Hicks began his career at Evarts High School in 1978. On January 24, 2019, Hicks became the first coach in history to win 1,000 games when Scott County defeated Frederick Douglass, 70-38. He is the only coach with at least 1,000 victories with 1,013 wins, according to KHSAA. Hicks amassed 13 seasons of at least 30 wins, four of those with the Corbin Redhounds. Hicks led Scott County to two state championships.
